I just visited a Permaculture site with some books
for sale. One of the books was about happiness and
the summary said it consisted mostly of: 1. Sense of
Purpose, 2. Self-esteem

Sigh... I think happiness is an important topic and
the quest for happiness is behind peoples actions. It
is manipulated by marketers and politicians. It is
(IMO) the key to motivating responsible actions
and creating ecopaths.
For the last 30 years i've thought about this and tried
various theories on how happiness works. It is complicated
and has so much misinformation and confusion that few
people have a good handle on how it works. Thousands
of books full of fragmented ideas and worthless opinion
are published each year.
I can't say that my views are the ultimate answer to this
puzzle but we do have some science and facts to go on. These
facts tell me to be critical of simple answers and sites that
try to merge Permaculture with sale of their books on
happiness.
A good exercise is to look at our actions and ask what
motivates us. This is probably tied to a belief about
happiness. What is happiness?
