The heartwood of cedar is very resistant to wood-destroying organisms.
Sapwood is an entirely different condition, rots very fast. I have pulled
three-year-old cedar posts and the sapwood was all gone, the only thing
remaining is the red heartwood, with red points sticking out where limb
nubs used to be.
My comment about standing cedars rotting from their cut limb nubs is based
on information from our local sawmill owner and operator who has been
cutting wood here for over sixty years.
