How about a hobby with elements
of adventure and mystery? Our weather was
once considered mysterious and it will
almost certainly be a hot topic again. The
potential impacts of "climate change" or "global
warming" are not for the faint of heart.

All this is discussed in a new book called:

  Tying Down the Wind
(Adventures in the worst weather on earth)
  Eric Pinder
  published in 2000

This is a light discussion of weather events
mixed with basic theory, facts, and folklore.
If you want to know why the sky is blue in the
day and black at night then this is the book
to read. It also examines folklore and sorts
out the useful ideas. How about these:

  When the pigs carry sticks
  the clouds will play tricks

When sheep go into the hills and scatter
  expect nice weather

When bees to distance wing their flight
  Days are warm and skies are bright;
But when their flight ends near home,
Stormy weather is sure to come.

The book goes on for 280 pages and does a good
job of making weather interesting. The setting
centers around Mt Washington in NE America but
describes weather as a global event.
