Rolling Blackouts Hit California

The news from California changes moment to moment, but one thing stays
the same: it's all bleak. see:

--------------------------------

No Immediate Relief from High Natural Gas Prices

Natural gas demand in 2000 has increased because of a number
of factors, including the start of operations at new
gas-fired electric-power generators and new home
construction, which tends heavily toward the use of natural
gas for heating and cooking. Natural gas prices are expected
to continue at levels much higher than last year through this
winter.

Auto News from Japan, Germany, Michigan

Following the example of Toyota's innovative hybrid
gas-electric car, the Alliance award-winning Prius, and
Honda's Insight, the Ford Motor Co. announced plans this
month to introduce a new technology to Ford Explorers in 2004
to raise fuel efficiency from 19 to 27 miles per gallon.
General Motors says it will begin offering a wide range of
vehicles powered by hybrid gas-electric engines in 2004.
DaimlerChrysler will begin selling a fuel-cell powered van to
the parcel-delivery company Hermes Versand Service in 2001.
Finally, The BMW Group announced this month that its fleet of
hydrogen powered sedans will be coming to the United States
on July 12 of this year.

jeff's addendum: Oil prices are projected to increase again
and the media will probably treat this as an isolated event
and act surprised. For me the big problems are still years
away but none of the reports discuss the long range energy
picture... yet! <grin>.
