Book review for:

  Organic Living
(simple solutions for a better life)
  by: Lynda Brown
  pub: 2000

This is a DK (www.dk.com) book which is known for quality. The photos
and layout are definitely well done. As for the contents.. well it is
difficult to find fault with any book that is pushing for a more
sustainable society. Given the current world tensions and the factors
that motivate them (economics, foreign policy, etc.) this book may be
a better path than military actions. OK, i'm a little biased and
believe issues need both introspection and external response. Anyway,
back to the book.

The target audience seems to be consumers and those affluent
enough to have choices. Since it is the consumers who help
drive non-organic industries this book is addressed to the
right audience.

The major sections are:
Farming, Food & Drink, Baby care, home & office,
  health and beauty, gardening

It lists the types of products which fit into an organic lifestyle
and presents all this in an appealing way. Many techniques and
practical solutions are discussed. I suspect anyone reading this will
already know these things. What they can do is give this book as a
gift. It is ideal for introducing organics without a lot of finger
pointing or emotional appeals.

The back of the book lists organic suppliers and places to get
organic products. This is what most consumers want and i guess we
have to accept it. Unfortunately, some of the suppliers provide
frivolous products to make people feel good. The truth is that it is
difficult to "buy" an organic lifestyle. It may be a first step, but
eventually you have to go deeper and live organically. We as a
culture have trouble visualizing this next step.. oh well, that is a
different topic.

The book is 250 pages and the stated cost is $29.95. The quality is
very high and would appeal to sophisticated consumers.

If anyone wants more info. on any part of this book yell.
