Thanks. This is annoying, as I use another system where hex numbers start with 
$. My fingers don't switch quickly enough sometimes to 0x prefix. At least now 
I know how to continue without restart.

BTW, is this behavior documented in any eCos documentation that I didn't read?

This is expected behaviour.

You should be able to type $c#63 and RedBoot will carry on.
If you really need to type $, try using \$
