If they work the same way (and the memory footprint
for DOM and ECS are the same) in which cases ECS would
be better than DOM? Actually, why would there be ECS?

I think what I tried to ask was this: Do I get any
memory/performance benefits if I use (1)
StringBuffer.append() or (2) ECS to create an XML doc
instead of creating a DOM Document in the memory and
serializing it?

I think SAX is just for parsing. I have to generate
reports from a database and create reports in XML
format. I do not think I can use SAX for that.
