Not trying to have all of us move all the chess pieces at once, so why don't you push your new ` convention first, and we'll all play with it for a bit, and see that directory scans work just fine, and then take the next step whatever that may be. For files with leading ` I would use the convention ``filename just like you use %% for % in printf.
