John Lanoue went back to his translator vendor armed with my explanation
of the X12 ISA Security Information. They gave him some run-around
saying that "[if ISA03] contains 00 and if the ISA04 contains something
other than spaces then make sure it matches the profile however if ISA04
contains spaces then ignore." John then "was told to check out the
standards in what is [referred] to as FRONT MATTER and see what it says
regarding the ISA03 and ISA04." John asks if someone could tell him
where to find this *FRONT MATTER*.
Dear John:
Your vendor, Compaq, is undoubtedly referring to the X12 standards at
the front of the X12 book before the detail of the transaction sets,
segments, composites and elements. The font matter includes:
Control Standards & Guidelines
X12.6 Application Control Structure
X12.5 Interchange Control Structures
X12.56 Interconnect Mailbag Control Structures
X12.58 Security Structures
X12.59 Implementation of EDI Structures -Semantic Impact
Design Rules & Guidelines
Of these, X12.5 Interchange Control Structures is the most relevant to
the issue of the ISA segment's security information. You can obtain the
X12 book or CD by going to DISA's Publications Catalog at
http://www.x12.org/apps/products/. But you're in luck: you don't have
to wait for the X12 book to arrive before you read X12.5 Interchange
Control Structures - the 004010 version is available in PDF at
http://www.disa.org/x12/x12c/X12CTG3/x12ctg3.htm. But you're not going
to see much there that I haven't already explained.
In short, DECEDI V3.2 should ignore the contents of ISA04 if ISA03, D.E.
I03 (Security Information Qualifier), contains code "00", which means
there's no meaningful information in ISA04, whether or not it's all
blanks.
