ASC X12.6 Application Control Structure defines an identifier. From my
reading, an underline is not allowed. The valid characters are uppercase
letters, digits and spaces.
The ASC X12.6 for version 4010 can be found at

Subject: ASCII Attribute Definition of "ID"?
Does anyone have the exact ASCII X12 definition for an ID field? I
need to know if an underline is in fact valid.
This is what I found, but it is not the official ASCII definition.
"An identifier is used for any variable, function, data definition,
etc. An identifier is a combination of alphanumeric characters, the
first being a letter of the
alphabet or an underline, and the remaining being any letter of the
alphabet, any numeric digit, or the underline."
