Christine Dohm, of Wachovia, asked Ann Cooper to clarify which version
Ann was referring to when she asked where to place payroll data in the
820 remittance. Christine thinks that a payroll loop was added to the
820 in version 4010. Ann acknowledged that she indeed is working with
X12 004010, however she feels the payroll loop doesn't appear to
accommodate information like Filing Status (single, married, etc.),
Number of Exemptions and Tax Allowance (additional deduction amount) for
each of three iterations - Federal, State and Local.
Dear Ann:
The N9 payroll loop was indeed added around the time 004010 came out.
It's certainly not clear how one would go about using the loop from the
layout of the raw X12 transaction. That's why implementation guidelines
were invented, and why FORESIGHT was the first to popularize a complete
suite of EDI productivity tools for building, displaying, comparing and
printing EDI implementation guidelines. For more information on EDISIM,
please go to our home page at http://www.foresightcorp.com/.
So we're going to need more information, and possibly examples, on the
N9 usage. The ASC X12F Finance Subcommittee had been working on a
tutorial addressing the 820 based on 004010. You can find out about all
standards, technical reports and tutorials that X12 has available or is
currently developing by checking the Standards Development web page at
http://www.x12.org/x12/dev/ and downloading the "October 1999 Status
Report - Quick Summary (PDF)." It lists "Tutorial: Payment
Order/Remittance Advice Transaction Set (820) (004010)" as having been
published in 1999. You can obtain the tutorial from DISA - make sure
you specify the tutorial's reference no. X12F/99-196 when ordering.
Though none of the 820 tutorial drafts I have read included detail on
payroll remittance, I believe stuff on payroll was added at the last
moment before publication. See the X12F - Finance minutes for Payments
& Invoices from June 1999, where the chair of X12F TG2 WG11, responsible
for the 820 Implementation Guide: Version 4010, presented the payroll
map. You can call him directly to ensure the appropriate detail is in
the tutorial before ordering it. I make you go through the following
rigmarole to show you where to research similar questions in the future:
You can find the minutes by going to http://www.x12.org/, and selecting
"Minutes Finder." Pull down and select "X12F - Finance". Then under
"June 1999 Trimester Meeting", select "Payments & Invoices (TG 02 )".
You can use the "Who's Who in EDI Standards Development," available at
the X12 home page, for locating the Work Group chair's e-mail address
and phone no. I don't want to list it here lest all sorts of cranks
harass the poor fellow.
