David,
I'm CC'ing this message to the list because others have
asked me the same thing.

>Would you be kind enough to refer me to sources of information
>for CONTRL
>and other envelope information? URLs, books and others are fine.

The only URL I've ever found is the one that Frank Dreisch posted:
http://pc1.gefeg.com/jswg, where you can find versions 3 and 4 of
ISO 9735. ISO 9735 describes the EDIFACT syntax, envelope segments
(UNA, UNB, UNZ, ...) and service messages (CONTRL, AUTACK, ...).
This information, until recently, used to be almost impossible to
find on the web, unlike the message directories, and most people
bravely started to build EDIFACT interchanges by guessing its
usage through inspection of examples or using industry specific
MIGs, which are usually incomplete.
Some aspects are still not clear to me, and someone recently asked
here something that still puzzles me, and I've never came across someone
capable of answering it: what on earth is DE 0032, Communications
Agreement ID?

Regarding books, I doubt that someone would write one on such a
dull matter as EDIFACT Service Segments And Messages ;-), but I
suppose you could buy the manuals from ISO, though.
