Jaime and other interested parties...
Favourable:
- Handles larger files without choking. Someone from PaperFree can give the
fancy explanation for why this is so. I've used to map files as large as
50-60mb without any significant degradation in performance.
- The user interface in the current version (5.x) is a BIG improvement over
older versions. It has an intuitive point-and-click interface that uses
drag-and-drop to accomplish a number of tasks. Minimal learning curve.
- Mapping from/to a nice selection of standards. Nice built-in suite of
standards. Not all mapping tools offer this much, although the *good* ones
will. WinMap offers ANSI X12, EDIFACT and HL7. If I've missed any I'm sure
Matt or Dan will correct me. ECMap, the upgrade to WinMap, adds support for
XML.
- Any-to-Any mapping. Believe it or not this is not a universal feature
among the leading mapping software applications. I've found this feature
very useful. WinMap makes this easy.
- Supports SQL statements, can read to/from ODBC-compliant databases.
- In my experience with them, PaperFree's tech support is good and is
constantly improving.
- PaperFree also has solid healthcare experience. Not all vendors can boast
this. If you work with healthcare EDI, or even if you work in an industry
that is at all related to healthcare, PaperFree's experience will be a plus.
PaperFree offers HIPAA compliance support.
Things I'd like to see improved:
- In the past PaperFree's user docs were less than stellar, although I have
it on good authority that they are currently addressing this. At their
User's Conference last fall a number of attendees brought up the subject of
the user docs and the response from the vendor was good. Since then I've
seen improvement and PaperFree has promised more good things to come. In
older versions the tutorials and examples were rather lean. The latest docs
I've seen have a greatly expanded set of case studies.
- While it is fairly easy to 'clone' an existing map and modify it for use
elsewhere there is still room for improvement here.
I'd like to stress that there is a large "IMHO" here. My comments are based
on A) my own experience working with WinMap and B) the results of a recent
evaluation I did on several competitive applications. Actual mileage may
vary. I don't work for PaperFree nor am I on Dan Kazzazz's Christmas list.
Hope this helps,

Subject: Paper Free products
Does anyone have experience (favorable/unfavorable) with Paper Free's
family of EDI mapping products and utilities?
How does Paper Free compare to the tools provided by Mercator, Sterling,
Harbinger, GEIS, and the like?
Thanks for your help.
