Anthony Whitehead, of Seeburger, Inc., had a momentary lapse of memory
and couldn't remember what the EDIFACT equivalent of the ANSI ASC X12
997 Functional Acknowledgement was.
Bob Carper was kind enough to help out, suggesting the EDIFACT APERAK
Application Error and Acknowledgement Message. Bob continued
"...although it is less precise than the 997 and each case of using
APERAK must be evaluated in terms of what the recipient trading party
needs to send back to the originating TP in the way of a message
acknowledgement."
The APERAK message is akin to the general purpose X12 824 Application
Advice. Like the 824, it can be used in the absence of a specific
dedicated response message (e.g., ORDRSP for ORDERS) to report errors
detected at the application level, for an otherwise syntactically
correct message. The EDIFACT (ISO 9735) CONTRL message, on the other
hand, serves roughly the same purpose as the X12 997, reporting on a
message's compliance with the EDIFACT standards. In a rudimentary way,
you could say the CONTRL and 997 are translator to translator responses,
while the 824 and APERAK are application to application
acknowledgements.
Actually, maybe a very simple APERAK could be used to acknowledge that
an ORDERS was successfully received and translated, before the data has
been posted to an order entry system, in lieu of the CONTRL which seems
not to be as popular as its X12 analog for some strange reason. It
might then be followed up by an ORDRSP, as a legal acceptance of the
ORDERS message.
I mentioned to Karen Feger yesterday that for looking up X12 and EDIFACT
equivalents there's a handy document called the "Functional Cross
Reference of ASC X12 Transaction Sets and UN/EDIFACT Messages," provided
by the X12 CEFACT Forum Task Group (CFTG) at
http://www.disa.org/x12/dltg/. But it's *REALLY* getting musty, because
not only did it not have anything about the 180's EDIFACT equivalent of
interest to Karen, it shows that the BANSTA Banking Status message is
the equivalent of the X12 824 Application Advice!
