Languages defined _using_ XML are markup languages. EDIFACT too is
a meta-language, but EDIFACT interchanges are sequential text files.
Do you understand the difference?

I said "as a meta-language". Read more carefully.

For interchange of text data, that is 99% of what business
application consume as input and produce as output. If you want
