Already many organisations are transferring EDI messages over the
internet. Some types of data do not require high security. But, the
internet is not necessarily less secure than a VAN. When you transfer
data to a VAN and through a VAN that may happen unencrypted, and it is
not too difficult for people that really want access to your EDI data
to plug into the cables the VAN uses for data transport and overhear
the data transmission. The internet brings much more security
awareness and many standard tools that can enhance security. Another
thing to note: even if your trading partners use a VAN to communicate
with you, they may still have their security compromised (through
internet or otherwise) and send you bogus data.

As for the other services VAN's offer, there is no reason why these
cannot be offered by the traditional VAN companies or new companies,
but now over the internet.
