Thanks to everyone that responded so quickly!!! There were a lot of great
answers that I just wanted to quickly summarize the various solutions for
control totals/audit procedures within an EDI transaction life cycle.
First, the detailed level checking:
OUTBOUND TRANSACTION
>From our Business App to the application interface - Compare the Business
Application information to the information GENTRAN records coming in. This
will have to be some custom code.
>From the application interface through GENTRAN - The information GENTRAN
records coming in should equal to the information GENTRAN rejects plus the
information GENTRAN correctly translates and sends out. This can probably
be done by GENTRAN??
>From GENTRAN to the VAN - Compare outbound GENTRAN information to the VAN
reports. Sounds like some custom code, or does GENTRAN have the ability to
do this if we use Sterling Commerce as our VAN??
>From the VAN to the Trading Partner's translator - Can't (and probably
shouldn't) check at this level.
>From the Trading Partner's translator to the recipient's Business App -
Again, can't really check at this level.
INBOUND TRANSACTION
>From the Trading Partner's Business App to the Trading Partner's translator
- Can't (and probably shouldn't) check at this level.
>From the Trading Partner's translator to the VAN - Again, can't really check
at this level.
>From the VAN to our GENTRAN translator - Compare VAN reports to the
information GENTRAN recorded on the data coming in. More custom code??
>From our GENTRAN translator to the application interface - The information
GENTRAN recorded coming in should be equal to the information GENTRAN
rejected plus the information GENTRAN correctly translated and sent out.
This can probably be done by GENTRAN?
>From the Application interface into the Business Application - Compare the
information GENTRAN correctly translated to the information that made it
into the Business Application. More custom code.
Overall lifecycle checking:
For each outbound transaction - Ensure a 997 (or some other form of
acknowledgement) was received. At the business level, at a minimum, ensure
the appropriate business transaction response was received. (i.e.: if we
send a Purchase Order, verify we receive an Invoice in response; if we send
an Invoice, verify we receive a payment in response.) Where possible,
require the specific acknowledgement associated with the outbound
transaction (i.e. if we send a Purchase Order, ask to receive a Purchase
Order acknowledgement).
Hopefully I've summarized this correctly. If so, this is a lot to tackle.
What do you consider the most important "touch points"?? Which are going to
give us the most trouble, based on your previous experience?? Which should
we implement first??
Thanks again for the wonderful responses!!!
