Jasper Abeyta, of Data Communication Solutions Inc., wrote in to "thank
everyone who responded [to] my split terms question earlier this week."

Dear Jasper:

I guess I must have missed all the responses to your question - the only
ones I saw about split terms were those from Ed Mitchell and myself. I
didn't see any other answers on EDI-L. So, what kind of answers did you
get? You can keep them anonymous since they were sent to you privately.

I'm sure that I am not the only one who would appreciate responders
copying the entire list. For example, how would anyone know the
definitive answer to Chuck Boucos' TA1 question if Rachel Foerster
hadn't piped up and shared with us all? Thank you, Rachel - you are
truly a goddess of EDI. And I also appreciate the updates from Joe
McVerry re: OBOE; an open source translator is a great pedagogical tool.

Now, have you received any answers to your other question, besides Kelly
Babcock? -

What would be the best method for a manufacturers rep to
be CC'd on every transmission between the actual manufacturer
and the purchasing activity? The choices we are given from
the VAN are "Auto Forward" and "Carbon Copy". I am not sure
what the difference between the two are, nor were the persons
at the VAN that were assisting in setting up the process.
Neither method seems to work very well, as we are missing a
considerable amount of transmissions. We are currently
   set-up with "Auto Forward".

So, could someone explain the difference between the two
methods, and also suggest the best way to ensure we are CC'd
   on every transmission.

Different VANs probably have different spins on these services, but as
you supposed, carbon copy is meant to make a copy of an interchange and
send it to another party in addition to originally intended recipient.
Auto-Forward, or Redirect, on the other hand, is just like
call-forwarding on your phone: the original recipient is bypassed, and
the message is sent directly to the forwarded address. This might
explain why you "are missing a considerable amount of transmissions."

Agreeing with Kelly Babcock, "I'd take [copying the manufacturer's rep]
into my own hands and create a 2nd transaction the same time I created
my initial one." There'd be no reason to be dependent on such a
marginal "value-added" service when you (i.e., your translator) can do
it yourself, especially a service which the VAN people themselves can't
explain. Then you're one step ahead of the game when and if you decide
to move all of your EDI traffic to a competing VAN, or even to Internet
EDI.
