Ron Cleghorn, of Pep Boys, who works for "Manny, Moe & Jack," asked on
Thursday "if there are any industry standards for the length of the Bill
of Lading and Trailer number fields? We are working on creating a
corporate standard for the Advanced Ship Notice."
By the way, check out the great deals Pep Boys has going on for the
Firestone ATX and ATX II tires! See http://www.pepboys.com/.
And to those who've written me wondering where I've been hiding: I
appreciate your concern - No, I'm neither sick, responding to all the
head-hunter ads on EDI-L, nor recovering from hair implants. It's just
that I've been busy figuring out what to do with all the money. See
"FORESIGHT Corporation Achieves Maximum Funding in Initial Round," at
http://library.northernlight.com/FC20000830600000046.html. I'm also
still trying to figure out what "IAI" is.
Dear Ron:
Doug Anderson, of Kleinschmidt Inc., helpfully noted "One of the
UCC/VICS work groups is trying to standardize the BOL number for the
retail industry, however, other industries may or may not follow the
UCC's lead."
So you might take a look at the Approved VICS Standards for the "VICS
Standard Bill of Lading," at http://www.vics.org/BOL.htm. The VICS
"Standard Bill of Lading number has a fixed length of seventeen digits.
It is numeric and composed of sixteen digits and a check digit. Using
the structured identification number will allow companies to process and
manage Bills of Lading more easily." It's composed of a UCC/EAN Company
prefix, a Serial number assigned by the shipper, and a check digit.
