Les,
I may have some information on this topic for you.
Generally speaking, the regular EDI translator vendors (or any-to-any mapper vendors)
make a complete product. For the complete product, they expect to be compensated
appropriately. (meaning much more than $1,000.)
You seem to be looking for limited functionality. I am aware that Sterling will sell
Gentran:Director with pre-formatted templates. You are only able to use the templates
that you purchase. Sterling sets up the templates and you pay for changes to the
templates. Using this model, you get less functionality in the software and pay less
overall. I believe that their software is still over $1,000.
I was formerly an EDI Consultant and have information from some smaller translator
companies. If this is an option that interests you, I could review my materials and
send you the companies' names.
You don't go into the entire context of your situation, so I offer another
possibility: If your trading partners don't have EDI systems and don't want to put in
EDI systems, you could put up a web form for them. The trading partner would log into
your URL, fill out the 210 form, and send it to you. The 210s could reach your
back-end systems in an electronic format.
Another variation on this theme would be to have a custom program for this purpose.
The custom program could display an entry screen to the trading partner, accept and
validate data, and send the data to you.
Of course, there are pros and cons to all of these approaches. I would be happy to
talk with you off-list about his. Another option would be to talk to an EDI
consultant who has worked with enabling ALL trading partners.
HTH,
Mary

Subject: Inexpensive EDI?
Hi all... took a small hiatus from this list, but I'm back!
Just a simple question I have today, are there any inexpensive
EDI packages out there (less than $1,000)?? I'm looking
for a package that I can recommend to others (Motor Carriers, to be
specific) that will handle the 210 transaction set.
The method of transmission of the data doesn't have to be specific, via
VAN/FTP/Email...
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks,
-Les Zalewski
