There are a few good arguments for API rather than direct
database mappers. (I'm biased BTW since Chameleon
is an API based mapper - although some day we'll be
coming out with a DB module).
...
Direct database mappers do not eliminate the need for
programmars (anymore than VB allows managers to
program). Most interfaces require data manipulation which
means that programming is involved. "scripting" is
really just another name for programming.
....
This manipulation is easier to implement and maintain in a 3GL language
that a programmar is familar in like C++, VB, Delphi, Java
than trying to get to grips with whatever type of scripting
language a complete integration mapping tool offers. 3GLs have no
limits. That means faster development and less costly
maintainance.
.....
Recruiting and keeping staff to work with engines that allow
them to use, and keep maintaining their skills with mainstream
languages like C++, VB, Delphi and Java is easier. That all spells
out to cost savings.
.....
Dealing with performance problems is easier with a API based mapper
since you have a lot more scope for tricks
The idea of code-free drag and drop interfacing makes an attractive
sales line - but doesn't often live up to it's promise.
Cheers,
Eliot

I haven't yet figured out why people use mapping products that require
programming steps to complete the job. There are several that will allow
you to map directly to IDOCS from anything else.

The TLW 4.3 product will produce a flat file to EDI and vice versa. The
files may not be in the IDOCS format, but that should be a pretty easy
programming effort.

Subject: Harbinger Trusted Link for Windows and SAP
All,
Due to changing clients, I've been off the listservs for a week or so. I'm
still not sure if I'm back onto SAPFAQ or not, their signon procedure has
gotten longer as they try to keep recruiters off the list. Please send any
replies directly to me, as well as the list, that way I'm sure to get them.
My client is a SME (small to medium enterprise) that is just implementing
SAP 4.6 on an NT platform. That have been using Harbinger Trusted Link for
Windows 4.3 (HTLW) with their legacy system. This system receives EDI
messages and prints them. To send out EDI, the data needs to be manually
put into a screen for translation.
Harbinger tells them that they need to purchase a product called SD Mapper
(?) in order to translate EDI to Idocs and visa-versa. Harbinger also
recommends some communication package to talk to/from SAP. Both seem
somewhat expensive, and the maintenance fees are exorbitant.
Questions:
Does HTLW work with integration to SAP?
Does it work well - e.g. would anyone recommend it? I know that Harbinger
has taken quite a bashing lately for lack of support.
Does the SD product provide ANSI X12 and EDIFACT standard transaction sets?
Does the product provide any capability to create an application layout
using a downloaded SAP Idoc format?
Is the communication package necessary to get stuff into and out of SAP?
Does it cost anything to upgrade to HTLW version 5.1?
Thanks in advance,
