The only advantage of supporting an XML format at the current time is that
it is cheaper to implement for small partners. They can easily print an XML
document for manual handling for practically nothing.

As for Internet communications, the unfortunate fact is that we are fighting
the VAN's. They are not going to give up their cash cow without a fight.
These guys are dug in deep on the demand side of the chain, and they are
consolidating their defenses by outsourcing the EDI departments of entire
corporations (e.g. KMart). They can easily afford to take a loss on
providing these services because they know they will more than make it up on
all the manufacturers that supply them. With all the consolidation (at least
in retail) on the supply side, we manufacturers are completely powerless to
fight this tactic. In addition, it is only a matter of time before these big
boys force their suppliers to pay *all* VAN charges for the "priviledge" of
doing business with them.

If I sound cynical, it is because I am. Other industries may be in better
shape because their demand side is less consolidated. I don't see any
feasible approach in the retail industry at least.
