For sending EDI messages you will need to use a (expensive) network,
lines and systems that work with EDI. XML does not have such
disadvantages. Also if you try to read an EDI message as a programmer
you will have to be an expert, EDIFACT standaard is for example 2000
pages, while the XML standaard is about 40 pages. XML is even without
special tools quite readable...EDI is not.
