I see many people say... "...traditionally more expensive VAN based EDI" and that comment gets understood by people outside of EDI to mean... "you can't use the internet for EDI". How you send someone data (via a VAN, direct dial modems over phone lines, dedicated lines, FTP via Internet, email attachment, etc.) has nothing to do with x12. Some companies use VAN's because of the services they provide, some use them because their customers tell them to and others choose not to use VAN's and provide those services internally. True.. some of the leading vendors are building support for XML but it won't really matter until the industry can build a standard XML purchase order (for example) that systems will use as standard input and output. Without that..... your back to translation, transformation, parsing.. whatever you want to call it. Thanks!
