I do not think there is any technical reason why http should not be used
as a protocol to transfer trad-EDI. It would not be my protocol of
choice BUT it has one significant attraction; the secure https variant
is widely supported by web servers and is easy to implement in an EDI
client system. This addresses the disquiet about security of Internet
transfers without resorting to proprietary encryption/authentication
standards. If only secure FTP was as widespread :-(
