It depends on what standard you want to use. The format you describe below
is from the X12 standard for DE373 Date: Prior to version 4010, the date
data element was a 6-character element with the format YYMMDD. Starting with
version 4010 the date data element was expanded to a 8-character element
with the format CCYYMMDD.
There are other formats for date ranges, etc. defined in UN/EDIFACT, ISO.
