Hello Chandrashekar.
Figures in Australia are the following
Set up costs at small vendor
1. Cost of EDI translaotor approx $1000 US.
2. Cost of trasnmission US$0.05 to US$0.15 /1KB so assuming so about 1 faxed
page per KB text only) could give you a figure.
3. Cost of mapping
If you do this as an industry group you can roll out the EDI translator with
the maps already installed
otherwise 1 to 4 man weeks per map depending on whther the bsuiness process
matches the vendors system
3. Integration costs between EDI and the sub system
I disagree with Derrick that
"As for integration into your host system - most major systems are already
supported and any delays or high costs are typically associated with
unknown, or customized programs."
As most small vendors are using small systems.
The figures I hear from vvendors vary from
1 to 5 man days if the business system already has an interface.
5 to 40 man days if it doesn't (depending as Derrick said on the amount of
customising ANDd also whether the business process is matching what is
available in the vendors' systems
4.0 As an alternate you coudl do do the following for small vendors (
assuming you don't want to web-EDI)
4.1 survey the vendors and find out what system they are using.
4.2 contact the software vendors directly and get details off their
interface.
4.3 Get them to offer an update to provide a hard coded EDI message suitable
for you and other people in the same industry as long as this vendor
considers your indutsry or you important.
4.4 use email instead of VANs assuming the telecommunications are reliable.
I would suggest you investigate every option ( ie a comination of EDI , web
edi and others) as unless you are an 800 lb Koala (or you can work with an
Industry group that is) you will have to use lots of ways to get
connections with small vendors.
