I want to notify you that if you are hosting the FTP server using IIS on
your NT box, you will run into an issue about every month.

IIS is attractive to use because you can set up IP level blocking - i.e.
only allow access to a specific user/password from a single IP address or
range of IP addresses. Even if a hacker had the user/password, he would
still be denied access from any but your TP's ID.

However, the issue you should know about is that IIS has a documented bug
that shows up occasionally where you transfer a file and go to rename it,
but it is locked. Due to some type of file system or caching issue, IIS
will hold onto the file for an extra long time (sometimes). I have had to
reboot the box to get IIS to let go of the file.

The Microsoft knowledge base lists the fix as having a retry cycle for the
operation (basically a non-fix). In my experience, I'm not sure that wuld
always work.

If your partner is hosting the FTP site on Unix or if you are using a
different FTP server daemon on NT, you shouldn't experience this problem.

I don't recall if Gentran uses a staged upload, but you want to make sure
your TP isn't picking up the file while it is still being transferred (and
vice versa).

Subject: Setting Up FTP Direct between TP's using Gentran

I was wondering is anyone has set-up FTP between two TP's using Gentran.
Here is my scenario.

The Hub will host the FTP server. They have a UNIX platform. We have an NT
platform and use Gentran:NT. We are currently doing FTP with GEIS using a
VPN line.

Are there any issues I need to be aware of? It is my assumption that there
won't be any real difference between the FTP with GEIS and the FTP with my
TP.

Thanks in advance,
.
