Implementation guide (004010X098 May 2000) on page 173, specifically
Data Element 1331 (Facility Type Code) within the CLM segment within
Loop 2300.
When Bill reads the associated notes, he understands "...that there
is an Internal Code list provided with 29 values and anything other than
those valid 29 should then be for compliancy sake then bounced off the
237 external code list which seems to be a superset of this valid list
and it may be subject to change? any part of this clear to anyone? any
thoughts or wisdom?"

The HIPAA guide is clear to me. The listed codes are a subset, included
for your convenience, of the HCFA Place of Service codes. These codes
may become out of date, so the HIPAA guide refers you to the "real"
authority in code source 237 in Appendix C: External Code Sources; you
can find the most current list from the HCFA, at
http://www.hcfa.gov/medicaid/posdata.pdf.
