All you need is a Windows NT or 2000 system and a network connection
(internal, DSL, dial-up, whatever).

You assign a 'special' IP address to your trading partner's system and
then tell your network routers that anytime it sees a request for that
IP address, it should go to the Windows 2000/NT system, establish the
VPN connection and then route the request across this VPN connection. If
your trading partner has set up the VPN then they will tell you what
security they have in place and what to load. Typically, standard
Windows VPN security will do it.

Once this is in place, any IP request (FTP, SMTP, Telnet, etc.) to the
'special' IP address can trigger the VPN to come up and give you access
to your trading partners system(s) and you can do this from any system
on your network that can see the Windows box.

Best bet is to run it by your networking people first as they may have
some firewall issues and they will want to make sure the VPN is one-way
(i.e. your partner can't join or get access to your internal network).

Subject: VPN's

Does anyone use a VPN, virtual private network, to connect to their EDI
trading partners? We have a partner who is interested in connecting
this
way. What hardware, software is involved. If one partner has a VPN
setup,
can the other partner transmit to that connection by any means, for
example
using ftp with encryption?

Thanks,
Debbie Taylor
