You are right on with DIRDEF !. The DIRDEF wound be a perfect way for UNCEFACT to
distribute their new versions of the EDIFACT Tables.
In fact, we have created a special function in our mapper called "MetaMap" to allow
you to generate all the individual transactions (INVOIC, ORDERS, etc...) from a DIRDEF
message. Unfortunately, as you point out UNCEFECT and other assiting members such as
EDI-TIE gave up their efforts to promote this message after 1998. We have successfully
tested our MetaMap function with DIRDEF 96, 97, and 98. It works great and generates
all EDIFACT messages at once.
We have also developed a similar MetaMap for ASCII Tables as supplied by DISA
(unfortunately DISA does not supply them in the 868 format). We have successfully
generated all the ANSI X12 transactions for versions 4010 through 4050 using this
MetaMap. It works !
If the standards organizations (UNCEFACT and DISA) could supply their new tables in
either DIRDEF or 868 format. Translators such as our would be able to import them and
exploit them as is, saving companies a lot of time and money.
Are the new EDIFACT Tables available in any structured format such as DIRDEF, 868,
gXML, or other ?

The issue here is no whether EDI software can map these transactions.
Any general purpose EDI solution should be able to do this.
The issue is whether EDI software can take its transaction
*definitions*
from instances of these transactions (in much the same way they can
import a gXML or SEF file). I have not heard of any software that can
do this, but I have only very limited knowledge.
It would seem these would be natural formats for TPs to exchange their
transaction specifications? Why is this not widespread? Is it perhaps
because the base versions of the specifications are not available in
868/DIRDEF format? If they were, would this change things?
