They can be used whenever a warehouse is involved. Typically they are used
with a 3rd Party logistics provider or 3rd Party warehouse. Usually when
it is your own warehouse (warehouse in the same company) they have access
to the companies ERP or WMS, making EDI unnecessary. Usually when you are
sending to another companies warehouse it falls under the standard 856 ASN
scenario.

Are these 2 transactions typically used in a Manufacturing environment, or
has anyone used them in a Distribution environment, perhaps for
inter-company transfers?

Beverly,

A typical supplier-warehouse interaction scenario (short-version) would be
something like this :

The Supplier(manufacturer) physically ships to the fwd warehouse. They
have
the option of sending a 943 to indicate shipment is on the way. Once
received by the warehouse, the warehouse sends back a 944 to acknowledge
receipt of the goods.

The 940/945 loop series gives the supplier the option of dictating to the
warehouse what to ship to the customer (940). The warehouse, once
fullfilling the order to the customer, informs the supplier what was
shipped
(945).

The 947 simply communicates inventory adjustment either at the supplier or
fwd warehouse.

Let me know if you need more detail.

  Subject: [EDI-L] 944 and 947 Transaction Sets

  Hello Group,

I was wondering if someone could please respond with just a general
overivew of the above transaction sets (944 Transfer Receipt and 947
Inventory Adjustment). I am from the point of view of a manufacturing
company which is in the process of setting up a third party warehouse with
a
facility on the west coast and one on the east coast.

Again, I just need a general idea of how these transaction sets interact.

  Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks and have a great day!

  Beverly
