Of coz there are several open source projects you may implement for 
your case. But you have to find a computer geek to help you implement 
it if you are not a programmer. Actually, AS2 is not that expensive 
(much cheaper than VAN)even you buy the software. serveral hundred 
bucks for software and several hundred bucks for the annual fee per 
customer. You may get some discount if you want to buy more 
licenses.you may try isoft and cleo. I used them before. They are 
good. 
Actually, buying a software with good credit is a good choice for 
most of companies which don't have enough resources to maintain home 
made software. Actually, we made AS2 by ourselves but we found it was 
not a good way to save money.
