I haven’t chimed into these
discussions much lately, but I have to agree with Nestor here. As an EDI Consultant, if a client of mine wants
me to take a spreadsheet sent from a Trading Partner of theirs and build a map
that will reformat it into an XML document that the client will import into
their back-office system, I’m certainly not going to say “Nope, can’t
do it, because I’m an EDI Consultant”. At the same time, I’m
not going to drop “EDI” from my title because I did it. The Spreadsheet was received
electronically, it contains data, and the whole operation was an interchange. “EDI” It may be a matter of perspective. A
person doing the mapping may not think of spreadsheets as EDI, but the person in
the Corner Office probably does, and I would agree with that guy. (He’s
the one approving my bill.) I would define EDI as the entire
discipline, and X12 as a sub-set, for lack of a better word. If X12 is the
defining part of EDI, then (as has been said in another response) what do you
call HL7 folks, or EDIFACT folks, or anyone who uses proprietary formats? A
business document isn’t necessarily defined by its envelope structure or
Standard. The transaction that the gas pump sends to EXXON may or may not be
X12 (I don’t know) but it certainly is a business document. From: Jon Garniss

of course they are sending you a spreadsheet that has the Enveloping structures
