I totally agree, EDI and MQ are complimentary not competing technologies.
MQ is analogous to FTP, AS2, but not EDI.  We implemented MQ with the
Department of Homeland Security for a US Customs application.  The error
recovery at the transport level is the best.  The MQ replaced an MSRJE comm
link, but the underlying system is still the same, only the transport method
changed.  Of course we are trading EDI documents!

MQ is a transport - it takes stuff from here and guarantees delivery to
there.  now, if you use MQ to send data to a translator and from the
translator to somewhere else ... then it's doable.  all of the larger
messaging flow systems that i've done use this architecture.  it's very
real-time friendly. 
unfortunately most of the legacy systems are still batch oriented, and most
of the major translators are built to process in a batch environment.
