I was trying to figure out how they would read the barcode on the fruit by satellite. Guess I got the articles mixed up ;)
As a ham radio operator, I know folks who routinely communicate over 1000+ miles using radios that emit less than half of a watt. I also know that a ($750 million) satellite with a dish antenna 70 feet across can listen in on cell phone conversations on earth even from 23,000 miles up. So it is not too big of a leap to believe you might hear a RFID chirp up in space. Narrowing the location of that pallet down to which continent might prove to be tricky though!
