I am at a client's location this week implementing barcode scanning with RF
handheld terminals. We usually use Teklogix equipment.
Scanning can be simple to complex. It depends on if you only want to
capture enough information to generate an ASN or if you want to track the
inventory all the way thru your facility. It is not simple, and not cheap
to implement. With this particular implementation, we are barcoding all raw
materials that come in the receiving dock (this is a meat processing
company), track the movement into raw materials inventory, track the raw
materials into the production room for processing, and then track the
finished goods as they come off the processing line. From there we either
track the finished goods into inventory or shipped to a customer.

While this client is tracking every box throughout their facility, you can
simply barcode cartons to ship, and scan the UCC128 labels to generate an
ASN.

It really depends on what your goals are.

Yes. Multiple things, depending on client requirements.

One client has a bunch of Symbol P360/P470 batch scanners. They scan the
orders as they are picked and then dump the data & print a PackingSlip. The
system exports the scanned information to a file that gets invoices by their
Accounting system (Acomba).

One client has a few Unitech batch scanners for Inventory. They count their
stuff once a year, download the data & compare it to their computerized
inventory.

Some have very expensive (it's all relative) WMS systems that have RF
scanners, linked to their shipping systems.

Inventory scanning is a bit vague. Give us more information, and I'm sure
that there are lots of people here with different solutions.
