Prasad, GIS is a very different kind of system. It will do a lot of things that most EDI systems won't, but it is sometimes fairly involved to make it do things most EDI systems do automatically (you have to set up your own business processes to do simple EDI interchange building splitting, invoking communications, etc.).
In terms of advantages, GIS will put everything you're doing now (including 1SYNC) into one package. GIS offers to routes to interact with 1SYNC. The first (and recommended by Sterling) is UCCnet Edition (which has been renamed for GIS V4). I have a client who has used it, but it currently does not support the Lowe's extensions (under V3 of GIS) and last I heard it won't. They plan on adding that support to the UCCnet Edition successor which runs under V4. The other option is to code your own maps and business processes using the UCCnet22 adapters and services. That approach will allow you to support the Lowe's extensions, but it's a lot of work and I ran into several product bugs when we tried that approach. Is it worth the trouble? Personally, based on a concern for least short term cost and effort, if you can find a good alternative for replacing Map Pack I would probably drop it in instead of replacing all of your current setup. But, your decision criteria may be different.
