There is plenty of logic in that, but for those less inclined to the logic of the situation, one can look to the standards for guidance. In X12, the component element separator is defined in the last element of the ISA. Here is what the X12 4060 manual has to say about the separator:
I15 Component Element Separator Type= MIN=1 MAX=1 Type is not applicable; the component element separator is a delimiter and not a data element; this field provides the delimiter used to separate component data elements within a composite data structure; this value must be different than the data element separator and the segment terminator As far as ISO 9735 (the syntax used by EDIFACT) is concerned, I cannot find a specific statement, however this may have been taken for granted since the syntax defines default separators which are all different and EDIFACT relies very heavily on composite data element structures.
