All,

Don't worry about Shan. He really did understand the point of my pipe vs
asterisk post. He just made his interesting explanation because he is
worried his point-haired boss reads this list, and he didn't want to re-code
all his TP setups to save storage space.

BTW - do you know that the asterisk is also known as the Nathan Hale
operator? It all happened back in the times of the American revolutionary
war, when the American patriot was executed by the British. His last words
were something like: "I only regret that I have but one asterisk for my
country."

Happy Friday!

Art

Ummm, he's fooling around...

8 bits is 8 bits, regardless, both are 8 bits. No disk space saved.

A pipe (|)in bits is represented by 01111100
Actually these represent states, on or off: therefore: off, on, on, on,
on, on, off, off represents the pipe symbol. The computer knows this
symbol as this combination of states.

An asterisk is also 8 bits.

The word cat is

C = 01000011

A = 01000001

T = 01010100

So that is 3 bytes or 24 bits.

See, now this is EXACTLY the reason y'all ought to switch to Softshare
VAN. You see, they charge by the transaction, NOT by the kilocharacter.
That means you could even throw in a few extra asterisks just for the
heck of it! <LOL>

But seriously, the asterisk (*) is a pretty fat character. Joe, tell
your boss you could save a lot on disk storage locally and on the van if
you switched your element separator to a skinny character like (|).

I've never seen it before and I'm not sure how it would work. My boss
made a suggestion that we can eliminate the extra '*' that we send in
the raw data to our partners thus saving on VAN charges.

Here's my question if I send my partner a Purchase order (850 or 875)
and I'm sending them a PID segment. How will they know what the
description is if I send it as.

PID*F*30 Count Box~  compared to PID*F****30 Count Box~
