Thanks for the comprehensive look. We did this at my previous job, and
that was in the day before we had any of this webMethods nonsesnse. :)
When a "canonical" was something you sang in church and we just called it a
"master file format." But those were the days we used to carve our own ICs
out of wood. :)

I have a lot to think about, it appears...

Richard,
We do exactly that using webMethods. We have our intermediary canonical
(Medtronic standard) format in XML for all the standard business documents
Medtronic exchanges and that decouples the external format from the backend
system. We then have standard mappings from the XML canonicals to our
backend systems both JDE and SAP. We then have multiple external formats
such as many EDI standards versions and XCBL that have standard mappings
built to the canonical format. The canonical is then standard accross all
our interfaces. The mapping to our backend system is standard for that
business document no matter what the external format. It works pretty
slick. If a trading partner then switches their format from EDI to XCBL we
simply disconnect their profile from the EDI mapping and connect it to the
XCBL mapping and the switch is done. When we want to bring on a new EDI
version we simply map it to the Medtronic standard canonical and we then
know it can feed any of the backend systems. We use a filter on the broker
subscribing service that selects which backend system the document is to
feed. Basically we have EDI to XML to IDOC, XCBL to XML to IDOC, EDI to XML
to JDE F47 files, etc.. of coarse we have the return of IDOC to XML to EDI
and so on as well.
Thanks,
Dawn

Yeah, people have told me about XI. I have added that to the list of
possibilities.

This thing is gaining legs, and we should be in good shape without my
actually having to deal with Gentran:Basic for much longer. :)

Rich - did you think of this one? if you follow the SAP way then you should
be looking at SAP XI....so to complicate things a little,
in a nutshell, its' not EDI to IDOC it now becomes EDI to XML to IDOC

Subtitled: "How to live happily with SAP using Gentran:Basic"

Hi,

We're using the Gentran:Basic mainframe product (for the nonce; plans are
to
change it but you know how that goes - those wheels grind ever so slowly.)

In the meantime, we are also staring an SAP conversion in the face. I'm
trying to think of a way we can NOT go in and make all the application
sides
of our maps (about 500+ maps) into IDOCs.

Now, I know that Gentran:Basic really can't create app-to-app maps, but I
was thinking that I could create a "standard" that would look suspiciously
like an IDOC - and then I said to myself, "Self," I said, "If I had this
thought, maybe others would have had it as well."

Has anyone done this? Am I wasting my time? Yes, I know that there are
other ways to do this, and I think I've examined most of them, and this
seems to be the most painless way to make it happen. If I'm wrong, talk
me
out of it and tell me what you think I should do.

We're about 2 years out, so I have some time. But the sooner we pick a
direction, the sooner we can plan and execute the plan.
