Hello group;

I am a network engineer at a VAN in Northeast Ohio. We have noticed
delays with our interconnect with GXS. Our communication sessions
were experiencing very long delays between the time a mailbag was
delivered to GXS and put into pending status and the close of the
comm session.

What was happening apparently is the slow-down in the AS/2 and ICS
operations at GXS were affecting our VAN-to-VAN interconnect. With
GXS, the communication session has to be left open until a mailbag
moves from pending to confirmed. Apparently, if the comm session is
forced to close before confirmation is delivered, the mailbag may be
discarded by the GXS side.

On May 15, noticed delays of as much as 38 minutes being stuck in
comm sessions that had pending status. Depending on business logic
driving the VAN-to-VAN interconnects, some VANs probably had a lot
of trouble figuring out if their mailbags had been accepted by GXS
due to the processing delays and lack of mailbag IAs coming back.
Things seem to be better today, May 17. So far all the mailbags
have been going on the first try, but IAs are a bit slow coming back.

We have asked the GXS support people if there is a parm we can set
to be able deliver mailbags asynchronously, thus getting around the
problem. The way GXS implemented communications is great for a
customer that sends some EDI once or twice a week manually by FTP -
they have sure indication their work has been processed. As a VAN,
we are more interested in working at the level of the mailbagging
protocol and don't need synchronous indication while we are in a
comm session. What we want to see is the IA being returned to us
from the other VAN.

Integration of processes is good, but when you can try to roll too
much functionality together, you may compound the complexity of
problems.
