Allen: At Loren Data we run a service called ECGrid, an outsourced solution for Interconnects. A number of large Value Added Services outsource all their interconnect traffic to us. This allows them to focus their resources on their customer-facing value proposition rather than expending talent and attention on the plumbing on the backend.
Recently, a major VAN approached us about outsourcing this aspect of their business. As kilocharacter prices drop, and the customer-facing services become more competitive, the maintenance of interconnects becomes a strong candidate for outsourcing. Interconnects are an essential part of trad-EDI; however, it is on the very low end of differentiating as all VANs must interconnect, and they must interconnect equally well. Admittedly, this is a niche market. However, moving the industry to a more utility-type infrastructure will facilitate the growth that we all believe this industry is capable of. We do not sell directly to end users, ECGrid is exclusively for electronic commerce service providers. Our system design, tools and support staff are geared specifically for the company who needs highly dependable connectivity to all the VANs and provides all translation, mapping and other end users services to their customers. We do not compete with our customers, we enable them. If anyone on this list is running a value-added EDI service and would like to connect to a service designed for service providers rather than a retail VAN mailbox, please drop me a line.
