True, if the data can be used to personally identify a person. ALSO.......While not covered by the HIPAA, you may have other problems with "confidential' information... e.g, contract pricing amounts reflected in either the 837 claim or 835 Remittance document. And speaking of the '835' remittance document.... you can download a FREE utility to 'de-identify' any X091A1 '835 Health Care Remittance Advice' document. Go to our web site at http:/www.talsystems.com, click on "Tech Corner" and download file 835did.exe. If you want to know HOW it is 'de-identified' ,just click on the "info" button and you'll get a complete document with one--click print which explains exactly how it's done (so you can satisfy yourself that nobody can put Humpty Dumpty back together again). And just to be shameless about the whole thing.... (a fair trade for a free utility, right?) 1.
