Walter,
Dan made good points about taking on the communication protocol issues that are
normally handled by a VAN. Another point worth making is that VANS provide the
middle person when finger pointing starts between trading partners when
transactions do not reach their destination as expected. I have been on both
sides of the fence on this issue and the VAN has helped resolve which trading
partner had the problem.
Since you volunteered your pricing I would suggest shopping around (as has been
suggested) for lower VAN costs. I think your management might be happier to get
a quick reduction in VAN charges vs. a relatively expense outlay of capital
(and time) to implement an in-house communications solution.
IDEA provides an Internet VAN solution(IDX2) to a wide variety of companies
from Fortune 50 to Fortune 1000 and our business continues to grow due to
aggressive pricing and world class customer service.
I would suggest creating an RFP both for an internal and external(VAN)
communications solution and put it out to vendors to help you with your
decision. I am sure you could find a good example of an RFP from this listserv.
Good luck.
Regards,
David Frenkel
