The inquiries may be sent one at a time, and would be considered to be 'real-time', with clearly defined tolerances for response times. They can also be 'batch', with a much looser time requirement The reason you so rarely see multiple GE's in a single ISA is two-fold. First there is a limitation on the translator application itself. Most translators do not provide this functionality, mostly because it's rarely implemented, and it is *never* required. The second reason has more to do with how businesses work. Purchase orders come from the purchasing department; invoices come from an accounting department. In the healthcare industry the same is true. Eligibility inquiries come from a patient system, claim status inquiries come from an accounting system. It would require far too much work to make these systems generate data in sync, and there's no particular reason for doing so. I do not know Gentran for Unix but this has got to be possible, since I know Gentran users send 810+856 to the same ISA partners all the time, as well as receiving 850, 830 and 860.
