With all respect to my esteemed colleague, I call BS.

SOX is not about "neener, neener you can't even see the production data."
That's crap. SOX is about making sure that there are CONTROLS (hopefully
automated, preventative, documented and audited) around access to production
data.

I was, and apparently still am, part of the SOX core team for J&J Consumer.
Here's a clue: We have access to view production data. We do NOT have
write access to production datasets. (That makes this an automated,
preventative control for production data files.) However, if we need to
make a change to a production file, we copy the production data to test,
make a change in the test dataset, then submit a request for a 3rd party to
migrate the data back to production, with an explanation of why the data was
changed and a copy of the business partner's request for a change. (That's
also preventative, as opposed to a detective control which examines stuff
after the fact.)

No big deal. Obviously too many of these changes would raise the eyebrows
of an auditor, but in the 3 years we have had this "SOX control" in place I
can count on one finger the number of times we've ever used it.

When it comes to interfaces, (of which EDI can be argued to be one,) SOX is
about CAVR - Completeness, Authenticity, Validity and Restricted Access. If
you can make (and prove) these assertions about your interface, you are
under SOX control.

As a matter of good business practice, one shouldn't change production data.
And like I said, in the almost four years I've been here we've ever only
done it once, and that was under duress with major senior leadership signing
off on it.

I can go off on SOX all day long, if anyone wants to talk about it. There
are so many misconceptions out there regarding it. It isn't such a huge
mystery, and it's not as draconian as people think.

never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never,
never, never, never, never
change the data. you should know better! does the mailman read your
magazines before he
delivers them? and, under sox, you probably can't even look at the
production data. it's a new
world out there. and, if you reject the data, you can't repair and
remap it ... your partner gets
to resend it. this is where use of a van is good (they can filter the
data in network) or bad
(ya gotta pay to send the data twice. i hope it's not an 832 or 852.)

consider yourself smacked.
