Brian and all,
Softshare's free EDI Notepad is not an EDI translator. It formats X12 and EDIFACT for human consumption. That's it. If you want a real translator with real scheduling and first-rate customer support, Softshare has it too, but that's not free. Softshare offers a web-forms interface where you see and print incoming docs, and use the web interface to fill-in the blanks for your outbound docs. For low-volume operations, this might be appropriate. They also offer a full-blown EDI solution using their products, ECS and Delta Enterprise. These include translator, any-to-any mapper, scheduler, TP Management, debugger, logger, file management, data transmission and receiving via secure and native FTP, SMTP, POP3, windows file system, NFS Gateway, HTTP, MS MQ, AS1, AS2, and AS3. The total package costs far less than you think. Contact me for the price. Yes, I am a Softshare rep. I became one after being a satisfied Softshare user in a manufacturing environment for a number of years. They are a great company, but except for the EDI Notepad, their stuff is not free. The ROI I realized when I worked for the manufacturing company was 2.5 months. Not bad. But not free. We only saved about $75,000 our first year as Softshare users. After that the savings got serious. But it wasn't free. Art Douglas wrote: For inbound transactions, you may want to download the FREE Softshare EDI Notepad which will transform X12 and EDIFACT into an easily readable format which you can then print. This will become tedious quickly, allowing you to jump in with the solution: A real EDI system. To find the download, go to www.softshare.com. I know it will not have all the bells of a $15k version, I just need something to get started & convince my boss that we need to invest in a 'real' on to make our, well my life easier. If you want anything which will do what I would call "the minimum"... 1. Edit inbound or outbound documents for compliance with ANSI standard 2. Generate 997 for inbound documents (and that is the 'minimum minimum') I know of no Shareware, and I will guarantee you there is no such thing as freeware. But what do I know? I've only been working with ANSI ASC X12 translators and mappers since about 1983 or so...... Then again, for (very) LIMITED purposes, you may not need a REAL translator. eg, you are doing one or two documents for one or two partners.... there's no reason a competent applications programmer with a knowledge of ANSI ASC X12 transactions can't cole up with something to handle the job. Please contact my office if you want/need to pursue a 'not a full-blown translator' option. Michael C. Mattias Tal Systems Inc. Racine WI [EMAIL PROTECTED] ...
