Angela,

Do you get the same products from the manufacturer that you do from
the distributor? Why not use the UPC that is on the packaging...?

We buy a LOT of product from distributors and not directly from the
manufacturer. When the item is set up in our system/item master, we
use the UPC from the product - no matter who the manufacturer is.
Generally, we don't get the same product from two sources.

The problem you may come up against when creating a "fake" UPC, is
that you may inadvertantly 'create' a real UPC that you may end up
getting in the future from another source.....

When we don't have a valid UPC for a product, our system generates
a "fake" UPC that is preceeded with 4000 and then our 7 digit SKU
and then the check digit. Of course, the 7th digit of our SKU is
also a check digit.

Another place you can run into issues with SKUs and UPCs is when
a "zero supressed" UPC (such as used on cans of Coke, Pepsi and
other food products) can be the same as your SKU - so scanning then
scans a UPC and brings up the SKU - on a different item.

possible option to popultate the SSCC-18 with in positions 4-10? We
check if it is all zeros when scanning.
