Well, yes, and no..... Based upon the SIMPLEST definition - yes, an e-mail document IS EDI... You ARE transmitting data electronically..... And even can be used as an ordering tool. I can submit a simple form as an e-mail document and that form COULD be a purchase order....
The fax, however, isn't... That's not data being transmitted electronically - it's going over a phone line as a "sound" - it's transmitted via tones.... But, I suppose, yes, you could even consider it an EDI type of transmission.... What My point really was that BOTH documents in your scenarios can be considered EDI. As I mentioned in another reply - just because there is some kind of human interaction, that doesn't make the transmission (an order, in this case) any less EDI.... Some people (and I know I'll get disagreements on this) consider that EDI should only be computer to computer types of communications.... But that is limiting EDI to provide only system to system information and that any other information takes away from it.... But, as I've mentioned before - here and in other postings - there are still human eyes and hands that need to be involved in the process - and sometimes that additional information send via EDI is needed for that human interaction with the system. We need to be sure that we don't cut out very order related transmissions and transactions just because they do not fit into a very rigid definition of EDI....
